Wednesday night I took K to Children's for his pre-surgery (Monday morning) tour. It was pretty interesting; they show the kids the lobby of the surgery wing (with puzzles, games & video game consoles). They then took us to an admitting room, and showed the kids how they will take their temperature, blood pressure & monitor oxygen, along with the jammies they'll put them in. They actually had the kids all come up & touch everything.
We then moved along to the surgery room where all the kids got a mask & cap (they showed them that the nurses & doctors will be "dressed funny"). They also let them smell the different masks so they could choose a "sleepy gas smell" -- it's actually just chapstick that they rub into the inside of the mask. Kevin went in saying "bubble gum".... came out saying he was gonna pick "chocolate".
Then we ended up in the recovery room and they showed them the different monitors and wires that they would be attached to them (via sticky stuff) and let them touch the IV (ewwww!). They told the parents that a nurse sits with the kids at all times and they are never left alone, and then they said they'll take them back to the admitting room they can have slushies (either red or blue). I'm thinking we're goign to need to take the (a) puke bucket and (b) Daddy's truck with the leather seats for easier clean-up. LOL! (Memories of the double puke-fest after the ear tubes....)
Anyway, poor Kevy has slept in my bed the last two nights (I need to remember to leave Daddy a note so that when he comes in tonite he doesn't land on him LOL!) and tonite he told me he's nervous about the stitches in his penis. Poor kid! Well, I'm glad I waited until the very last tour before his surgery to take him so that this isn't dragged out for him!
